Rua do Carmo, 87-B
From history to craft

After the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, the Carmo Wall was built next to the ruins of the Carmo Convent in the city’s downtown area. During excavations in the early 20th century, unused spaces within the wall were converted into small businesses, including Raul Pereira & Co. Jewelers.
Featuring an impressive heart-shaped design on its facade, the store was renamed “Joalharia do Carmo” in 1926.

The Art Deco Façade
The façade of Joalharia do Carmo, designed by architect Manuel Norte Júnior, is a beautiful example of Art Deco style. Known for also designing the famous A Brasileira Café in Chiado, Norte Júnior created a striking front on Rua do Carmo.
It features two Corinthian columns and a bold coat of arms with the Portuguese shield over the Cross of Christ, set in an ornate heart crowned with castles and framed by golden laurel leaves—reflecting the elegance of the time.

A legacy we preserve
The design and furniture are original: mirrored sideboards, Baccarat crystal chandeliers, spiral staircases, and pastel tones all highlight the beauty of Filigree.
Recognized as a "Lisbon Historic Shop" by the Lisbon City Council, Joalharia do Carmo has preserved its original identity, remaining a proud guardian of Portuguese jewelry and a rare, long-standing establishment in Lisbon's historic district.
